Many are the plans in a person’s heart, but it is the Lord’s purpose that prevails. (Proverbs 19:21)
At the beginning of January, I thought that I would soon be leaving for Tanzania for possibly the best two months of my life until that point. Despite having Covid myself, which should have been a significant hint, I was totally in denial that there was any other option. I had excited myself for the past three years of my studies for this amazing overseas internship opportunity that I would get to embark on.
When I got the news that I would not be able to travel about a week into January, I was devastated. I was grateful Emmanuel International Canada was able to provide me a local internship, however it was hard to overcome the heartbreak. I tried to remain optimistic based on the advice of a professor and the conversations with the EIC team that this would still be a beneficial and rich learning experience.
As I got deeper and deeper into my time with Emmanuel, I became aware of God’s greater plan and purpose.
During my time, I was able to conduct interviews and engage in conversations with almost every EI office around the world. It was so encouraging to hear about all the amazing work that was being done. With the possibility of a future in mission work, this gave me an expansive look into a lot of the projects and work Emmanuel is involved in, enabling me to better assess where the LORD is leading me in the future.
I also became aware of the major benefit this local internship has provided me for my near future. Most entry level jobs in international development organizations involve a lot of donor relations and administrative work. Had I gone to Tanzania, I would have gained lots of experience in project management, however, I would have been far less equipped in the donor and administration aspect, possibly making it more difficult to find a job in the non-profit sector after graduation. Staying in Canada has given me a much better understanding from the funding country perspective of development work, better preparing me for my near future.
My time at the Emmanuel International Canada office has been more enriching that I could have imagined. Though I did not know it at the time, God has been in control throughout this whole experience. And because of this, probably the biggest take away for me has been to trust God, always.
For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the Lord, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you a hope and a future. (Jeremiah 29:11)

We at EIC were excited to see have Sarah with us the 2 months Sarah. It was a turn of events when she wasn’t able to travel to Tanzania, but looking back as she mentioned was an act of God and we were thrilled to have her in our Canadian office. During the two months we got to know Sarah and her heart for missions. We pray for her future endeavors and where God will lead her. In the coming weeks we will be sharing stories that Sarah was able to write during her time with us and meeting with our countries online. Keep checking back as we share projects and stories.
