Do you take access to basic education for granted? If you are like most Canadians, you probably answered, “Yes.” It is hard to imagine life without it!The Gumuruk people are mainly from the Murle tribe which is one of most neglected tribes in southern Sudan, numbering approximately 300,000 to 400,000 people. The Murle live south-east of Juba, the capital of the Government of South Sudan, and very close to the western Ethiopian border. They are one of the most educationally marginalized ethnic groups in Sudan. Professionally they are nomads just like the Maasai of Kenya, with their wealth consisting of the cattle that they possess. The ongoing civil war has meant that the livelihood for the majority of the Murle people, caught between the warring parties, has been greatly affected. One of the most pressing needs of the Gumuruk community is access to education and leadership training. Emmanuel International Canada and the Gumuruk Presbyterian Church are working in partnership to meet this need in order to provide a literate future for the young children and youth of the Murle tribe. The goal of this joint venture is to improve the post-secondary education standards in the Gumuruk community, to build their leadership capacity, and to provide basic education for all, with a focus on helping former child soldiers and orphans. We want to accomplish this through the implementation of a scholarship program, a leadership and development training program, and through meeting the basic educational needs of the people of Gumuruk. Our goal is to raise $45,000 for this program. There has already been an outpouring of Canadian generousity with an initial “seed” gift of $10,000 which was designated for the program! Please join with EICanada, the Gumuruk community and other concerned Canadians in this promising opportunity to offer education and leadership training to a people who has never been given a chance.
