Title: Fuel-Efficient Stoves Project Officer
Location: Tanzania

Background

EICanada has been working in partnership with the Anglican Diocese of Ruaha in Iringa, Southern Tanzania for over 11 years, assisting the Diocese with physical and spiritual development projects in rural communities.

Deforestation has been identified as a major problem that is causing poverty in many rural communities. People are having to go further and spend longer collecting firewood while their local environment is being irreversibly damaged. The use of traditional household cooking methods (3-stone fires) has also been identified as a major cause of respiratory disease because of the excessive amounts of smoke produced.

EIC is assisting the diocese to address this issue with the Probec (Promotion of Biomass Energy Conservation) program, in partnership with GTZ, a German NGO. Training has been provided in the construction of brick stoves which use 50% less firewood than a traditional 3-stone fire, and in a pilot project a number of stoves have been constructed in the homes of Diocesan staff.

The long term aim is to identify the most suitable stove design and to establish a sustainable supply of energy efficient stoves in the rural communities, in which the income prospect for local stove producers is the incentive to produce more

Responsibilities

The Project Officer will report to the EI country directors and will work alongside staff of the partner church. His or her responsibilities will include:

  • Evaluation of existing stoves considering producers and end-users.
  • Identifying suitable technologies based on availability of local materials, cost, skills required and social factors.
  • Liaising with partner organisation GTZ who provide training and technical expertise.
  • Networking with other producers, users and promoters of fuel efficient stoves within Tanzania and beyond.
  • Assessment of fuel security situation in target communities through household surveys.
  • Arranging training on stove construction for potential producers.
  • Promotion and ‘social marketing’ of improved stoves in the field through demonstrations and cooking competitions.
  • Facilitation of construction of improved stoves in community institutions including schools and medical centres.
  • Proposal writing and sourcing of funds for the ongoing promotion of stoves.
  • Budgeting, planning and report writing.

Prior to starting work the candidate will undertake a 1-2 month language course in the town of Iringa to learn Swahili.

Duration
1-3 years.

Requirements

The candidate should have a degree or higher diploma (note this is a requirement to obtain a residence permit for Tanzania). A background in environmental work or business would be an asset. The candidate should have excellent people skills and be a good communicator. A driving license is required. A committed Christian faith is essential and the candidate should have experience in Christian service.

Please note formal job descriptions are of limited scope in cross-cultural Christian development work. EIC considers the following personal qualities to be just as important (if not more) as formal qualifications and experience: flexibility, humility, servant-heartedness, and willingness to learn. EIC staff live and work alongside local people and value this serving relationship.

Candidate must agree with, and be committed to EIC's doctrinal statement, mandate and policies.
