Title: Rain-Water Harvesting Project Manager
Location: Tanzania

Background

EICanada has been working in partnership with the Anglican Diocese of Ruaha in Iringa, Southern Tanzania for over 11 years, assisting the Diocese with physical and spiritual development projects.

A crucial need of many of the rural communities in this area is clean water. In many villages, underground and surface water sources are unavailable or inadequate, but rain-water harvesting (RWH) can often provide a solution. By collecting and storing rainwater from roofs of buildings, a very reliable and clean source of water can be provided right where it is needed most. If used carefully, rain-water collected during the annual wet season can meet the needs of households and community services throughout the dry season.

EIC has completed a project to install collection tanks and guttering for a village health centre and pre-school and preparations are underway for similar projects at a school and another remote village health centre. EIC’s philosophy of using simple repeatable technology means that materials available locally are used in these projects and local people are trained to do the work themselves.

Responsibilities

The Rain-Water Harvesting Project Manager will oversee RWH projects in village locations, having responsibility for project planning, sourcing and supply of materials, budgeting and reporting. He or she will supervise technicians in the field, and will in turn report to the EI country directors.

  1. He or she will liase with staff of the Diocese in the field as well as at the head office in Iringa, and develop relationships with members of the church and the wider community in the field.
  2. He or she will also develop networks with other implementors and users of RWH in Tanzania and beyond, as well as evaluating existing systems and researching alternative technologies.
  3. Prior to starting work the candidate will undertake a 1-2 month language course in the town of Iringa to learn Swahili.

Duration
Preferably 2 or more years.

Requirements

The candidate should have a degree or higher diploma (note that this is a requirement to obtain a residence permit for Tanzania). A background in engineering, construction, or project management would be an asset. The candidate should have excellent people skills and be a good communicator. A committed Christian faith is essential. A driving license is required.

Please note formal job descriptions are of limited scope in cross-cultural Christian development work. EIC considers the following personal qualities to be just as important (if not more) as formal qualifications and experience: flexibility, humility, servant-heartedness, and a willingness to learn. EIC staff live and work alongside local people and value this serving relationship.

Candidate must agree with, and be committed to EIC's doctrinal statement, mandate and policies.
