The Philippines: Urgent Response in the Wake of Devastating Tropical Storm
People are desperate. Most lost everything they own
including their homes. They urgently need food, clothes, clean drinking water, medicines & shelter.
They need your help!
On September 27, Manila and the surrounding regions were caught unprepared as 14 inches of rain fell in a matter of 6 hours plunging over 12 million people into a watery deluge! Low lying areas and those along the riverbanks were inundated in several feet of water.
Most people had no time to save their belongings as the flood waters rose: homes were submerged in 12 feet of water in half an hour. Rich and poor alike were affected. Hundreds fled to second stories or to roofs waiting to be rescued, some for 24 to 48 hours before help arrived.
Hundreds of thousands of people across the northern Philippine island of Luzon watched as their homes and everything in them, including family members, were swept away in the torrential rains and flash floods.
It is the worst flooding in the Philippines in 40 years.
More than 300 people are known to be dead. Countless others are missing and more than 350,000 people are homeless and displaced. Over 38,000 houses are gone, cars are overturned and mud covers everything.
The government has declared a “State of Calamity.” And on top of all this is the threat of further substantial damage and destruction from another tropical storm which is set to slam into the already battered country any day now.
The Philippines has been an EI program country since 1980 with programs and church partnerships on every major island of the country, including Luzon where the greatest damage has taken place.
EICanada and it’s partner churches in the Philippines are urgently trying to raise $50,000 for the massive relief efforts needed to provide immediate assistance with things like clothing, blankets, soap, food, medicines and safe drinking water.
In this time of great need I am asking you to take part in the efforts to save lives in the Philippines. Your gift of $50 dollars can go a long way to providing a family with
aid.
Please act now! Together we can make a difference.
