Community Voices & Action: GBV Awareness Campaigns in Phalombe
This week, the Emmanuel International Malawi team hit the ground running in Phalombe, utilizing mobile PA systems to host interactive, high-impact gender-based violence (GBV) awareness sessions across Traditional Authorities (TAs) Kaledzera and Chiwalo.
Highlights from Days 1 and 2:
Overcoming Obstacles in TA Kaledzera: Despite initial delays caused by regional fuel shortages, our team adapted quickly. By driving the PA system throughout the TA—reaching residents directly at their homes and public centers—we successfully re-mobilized the community, drawing 59 active participants (41 women and 18 men) at a key center.
Overwhelming Response in TA Chiwalo: Community mobilization in TA Chiwalo was exceptional! The PA system drew massive, highly engaged crowds that exceeded our headcount capacity. We estimate about 1000 people attended, showcasing a strong community desire for dialogue and change.
Breaking Down Key Issues: Both sessions featured energetic Q&A discussions defining various forms of GBV, detailing its impacts on families, and mapping out clear referral pathways for survivors. We also issued a strong call to action regarding child protection—urging parents to protect children from child marriage, labor, abuse, and trafficking as the new school term approaches.
Inclusive & Active Male Participation: Male attendees were notably vocal, opening up about GBV directed at men. Many highlighted how traditional customs, cultural norms, and fears of eviction under matrilocal land tenure systems often keep men silent.
Dispelling Myths: Local chiefs, police, and Community Victim Support Units (CVSUs) praised the initiative. A major takeaway was dispelling the common misconception that survivors must pay fees to report cases or access referral services—reaffirming that support is free and accessible to all.
Together with local leaders and law enforcement, we remain committed to creating safer, better-informed communities for everyone.
