Across Tanzania, a significant gap persists regarding puberty and adolescent health. Due to deeply entrenched social norms, stigma, secrecy, or the fear of punishment, many young girls and boys are forced to navigate the profound physical, emotional, and social changes of adolescence completely in the dark. This lack of timely information can severely impact their confidence, self-esteem, and overall well-being – often manifesting as shame, anxiety, and embarrassment that hinders their active participation in school, their community, and the church.

In response, Emmanuel International Tanzania (EITZ), in close partnership with the Igombe Christian Center (ICC), launched a transformative Girls' Health Project in 2019, followed by a dedicated Boys' Health Project in 2024. Together, these projects aim to reach adolescents on both a physical and spiritual level by fulfilling three core pillars:

1. Keeping girls in school by providing essential menstrual hygiene resources
2. Dispelling shame and taboos through accurate health education
3. Teaching girls and boys that they are profoundly loved by their Creator

Continuing the Mission Amidst Challenges

Since its inception, EITZ has worked faithfully within the Ilemela District of North Mwanza, delivering holistic physiological, social, and spiritual guidance to over 4,200 students across the Bugogwa ward. However, the true test of a project's foundation comes during seasons of unexpected trial.

In December 2024, the team faced a major challenge when Laura, a key project figure, had to return to Canada due to illness. What was intended to be a brief two-week stay stretched into an 8.5-month journey of recovery. Deprived of her daily on-the-ground guidance and support, local team members Theopister, Esta, and Patrick had to lean heavily on faith and each other.

Working with government schools already presents scheduling hurdles, where sudden changes in assemblies, exams, and holidays can disrupt timelines at a moment's notice. For instance, a planned session for girls at Bugogwa Secondary had to be postponed to early 2026 because the students were busy preparing for major exams.

Yet, rather than stalling, the project sustained its momentum. While typical years are marked by "progress," the EITZ team views 2025 as a beautiful celebration of "maintenance" and an undisputed reminder of God's absolute faithfulness through uncertainty.

Groundbreaking Accomplishments in 2025

Despite the long absence of structural oversight, the local EITZ staff stepped up marvelously. Throughout 2025, the team successfully provided holistic training sessions to 904 students – including 415 girls and 489 boys at Igombe Primary, Bugogwa Primary, and Bugogwa Secondary Schools.

In tandem with teaching, the project expanded its hands-on resources. The team sewed thousands of reusable sanitary pads to support girls' menstrual health. They also trialed an innovative sustainability pilot by sewing and selling 39 school uniform skirts to ICC families, generating 392,000 TSH. While local cash-flow constraints and market competition meant the pilot only broke even, it provided valuable insights into structural sustainability and community purchasing power moving forward.

Most importantly, the end of the year brought the team back together for spirited, honest conversations. Sharing perspectives between lives in Tanzania and experiences in Canada helped the staff understand one another deeply, strengthening their unity as a team.

We thank God for the year 2025 and for being with us. Even though Laura was not there, we continued our work and saw God at work among us. The girls continued to be taught in all matters of health and spirituality. We are blessed!

Regarding the Strength and Dignity project, on the boys' side, we are grateful to have received a positive response from both teachers and students. The boys have been calm, active contributors during our lessons, and consistent attendees as well. We believe that these lessons will benefit them greatly.

We asked the boys questions, and they responded well. Patrick and Eunice also assisted with teaching. We taught girls... we were happy to share the word of God because we want them to know God and learn how to take care of their bodies. That's why both health education and Bible teaching are important to us.

Looking Forward

With the momentum generated by the resilient team, EITZ has an ambitious and hopeful vision. The core objectives include:

• Continuing to see young lives radically transformed
• Building a brand-new block of toilets to physically improve school hygiene infrastructure
• Growing and developing closer cohesion as a team
• Encouraging the ICC to take greater financial and operational ownership of the project
• Empowering local schoolteachers to step into these roles and continue the health and spiritual teachings independently
• Implementing more consistent monitoring and evaluation tools to measure long-term impact
• Expanding educational outreach specifically to Bugogwa Secondary and Kilebela Secondary Schools

The story of EITZ over the past year is a testament to what can be achieved when a local community is truly empowered.
