In the West Mwanza District of Tanzania, many rural pastors face steep challenges. Limited opportunities for education can hinder their ability to bring about comprehensive, gospel-led transformation in their communities. Recognizing this baseline need, Emmanuel International Tanzania (EITZ) has partnered with the Tanzania Assemblies of God (TAG) in West Mwanza District to foster long-term community growth.

This five-year collaborative effort has supported the establishment of a Church Planting School in Sengerema. While TAG imparts vital knowledge to aspiring church partners, EITZ focuses on equipping active pastors with Holistic Mission and Transforming Church principles. The goal is a profound one: to engage pastors in both non-profit and for-profit endeavors that transform their surrounding communities.

Principles of a Wholistic Mission

The backbone of this pastoral training program is the Bible, blending spiritual teachings with highly practical, real-world dimensions. Instructors from EITZ and the partner church draw upon Scripture and specialized literature to cover essential, daily topics including:

• Business and finance
• Agriculture and animal husbandry
• Environmental stewardship
• Health, entrepreneurship, and social/political development

To ensure these principles translate to sustainable realities, EITZ initiated localized income-generating activities directly at the school – including a dairy cow project, a drilled well, and a tree nursery. These initiatives provide a self-sustaining stream of income to fund pastor training and environmental conservation without relying strictly on external aid.

Progress, Accomplishments, and Navigating Challenges

The progress of planned activities shows encouraging milestones alongside practical lessons in adaptability.

• Training Success: The program successfully gathered 8 capable instructors and completed its midline project evaluation. It successfully trained 12 participants – primarily young pastors and graduates of TAG church plantings – and provided them with full accommodations and food during their studies.
• Navigating Agricultural Seasons: While the original target was to train 30 pastors and 15 pastors' wives, local scheduling conflicts arose because many targeted participants engage heavily in agricultural activities during rainy seasons.
• Adapting Sustainability Projects: Operational challenges, such as livestock diseases affecting the dairy cows and fluctuating dry-season water levels impacting the tree nursery, prompted EITZ to take an adaptive approach. Livestock numbers were intentionally adjusted from five down to two cows and one calf while seeking veterinary advice to make informed long-term decisions.

I started this small poultry project after I completed the holistic mission training... The chickens and ducks are raised for both eggs and meat, as I will be selling some of them in the local market. My goal is to expand the farm so I can provide an even better future for my children since I am their only parent, my husband passed away long ago.

The training taught me that holistic mission is about caring for the whole person; spiritual, physical, and social needs so that people can thrive in every area of life. During the training, I learned how to integrate faith with practical skills like agriculture and entrepreneurship.

Looking Forward

As EITZ and its partner church push deeper into the project timeline, several strategic goals are set to maximize community ownership through 2026:

• Introduce post-training mentorship and sponsorship programs specifically tailored for women beneficiaries
• Finalize training with an additional 30 young pastors
• Progressively hand over overall management and project ownership to the local partner church to ensure long-term, independent sustainability
• Conduct a final participatory project evaluation by October 2026
