U.N. food agency says 14 million face hunger in southern Africa
About 14 million people face hunger in Southern Africa that has been exacerbated by an El Nino weather patterns, the United Nations World Food Program (WFP) stated recently.
The worst-affected country is Malawi, where 2.8 million people, 16 percent of the population, are expected to go hungry, followed by the Indian Ocean island of Madagascar where almost 1.9 million are at risk.
Richard McGowan Executive Director of Emmanuel International (EIC) said, “for the past 2 years heavy rain and floods has devastated Malawi's ability to plant and harvest crops. Emmanuel International Malawi and The World Food Organization UN is helping to feed over 600,000 people in the Zomba region of Malawi.”
